Nobelprijs voor wiskundige

Tja, er is natuurlijk geen Nobelprijs voor de wiskunde, maar heel wat wiskundigen hebben toch zo'n prijs in de wacht gesleept. Meestal doen ze iets met natuurkunde of economie (speltheorie is altijd goed) en Bertrand Russel kreeg er één voor de literatuur. Laatst ondekte ik dat Nobellaureaat John Coetzee ook al wiskunde heeft gestudeerd.
Ik las zijn Youth: Scenes from Provincial Life II en ergerde me vreselijk aan de hoofdpersoon, de lamlendige wiskundestudent John. Pas na het lezen ontdekte ik dat het boek autobiografisch was. En toen was ik toch gefascineerd, want zoals Martijn elders opmerkte: "Ook mooi om steeds, als Coetzee weer faalt op literair, romantisch of sociaal vlak, te bedenken: ja, maar later won hij wel de Nobelprijs."
Hierbij twee stukken uit Youth die over wiskunde gaan.
He is falling behind in his studies and he does not see how he will ever catch up. In his first two years at the university he had been one of the stars in his class. He found everything easy, was always a step ahead of the lecturer. But of late a fog seems to have descended on his mind. The mathematics they are studying had become more modern and abstract, and he has begun to flounder. Line by line he can still follow the exposition on the blackboard, but more often than not the larger argument eludes him. He has fits of panic in his class which he does his best to hide.
What draws him to mathematics, besides the arcane symbols it uses, is purity. If there were a department of Pure Thought at the university he would probably enrol in pure thought too; but pure mathematics appears to be the closest approach the academy afford to the realm of the forms.
