De favoriete (nog levende!) wiskundige van... (22)

Marcus du Sautoy is zeker één van mijn favoriete nog levende wiskundigen. Hij doet veel aan de popularisering van wiskunde: hij presenteert programma's bij de BBC en schreef het onvolprezen boek The music of the primes. Zijn nieuwe boek gaat over symmetrie en het heet Finding Moonshine. Ik ga het binnenkort bestellen!

Du Sautoy werkt(e) als wiskundige aan zeta-functies. Hij kreeg in 2001 de prestigieuze Berwick Price van London Mathematical society. Ook werd hij in april 2004 door Esquire gekozen als een van de honderd meest invloedrijke mannen onder de veertig.

Vaak als ik op internet een bijzonder goed geschreven stuk over wiskunde tegenkom, met daarin volop pakkende voorbeelden, dan blijkt dat geschreven door Du Sautoy. Redenen genoeg om te vragen wie deze man bewondert. Hij kiest een naam die we eigenlijk al eerder verwacht hadden in deze rubriek...

Alexander Grothendieck

Alexander Grothendieck werd in 1928 geboren in Berlijn. Zijn vader was een opmerkelijk figuur: deze anarchist werd op 18-jarige leeftijd al veroordeeld tot de doodstraf in Rusland, kreeg gratie omdat hij zo jong was, verloor een arm bij een ontsnappingspoging en werd later vrijgelaten. Hij vocht in de Spaanse burgeroorlog en werd uiteindelijk als 'ongewenst' gedeporteerd naar Auschwitz, waar hij in 1942 overleed. Alexander woonde toen al een paar jaar in Frankrijk. Hij studeerde later aan de universiteit van Montpellier. Daarna ging hij naar Parijs en Nancy en werd hij lid van de legendarische groep Bourbaki. Na een paar jaar in São Paulo en Kansas, keerde Grothendieck in 1956 terug naar Frankrijk. Drie jaar later werd hij hoofd van het nieuwe Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques. Over Grothendieck valt veel meer te vertellen. We vroegen Du Sautoy per email waarom hij Grothendieck bewondert en wat er zo bijzonder is aan zijn werk. Ik vind zijn antwoorden te mooi om te vertalen. Ik verwacht dat de meeste lezers geen moeite zullen hebben met het Engels...

"He created a new language to be able to gain new insights into how to solve equations. Solving equations has been a major theme in mathematics ever since the Ancient Babylonians started solving the first quadratic equations. But some equations have proved very difficult to unlock. For example the equations at the heart of Fermat's Last Theorem remained enigmatic for centuries. It was only with the developments of techniques of Grothendieck and other French mathematicians that we have finally got the tools to solve such problems.

Grothendieck is a master of seeing structure where others before could only see a mess. It is a very abstract language that he has produced and many mathematicians are still battling to master its grammar. But everyone knows that mathematics changed after Grothendieck's contribution."

Have you ever worked together?

"In a dramatic gesture Grothendieck left mathematics in 1970 in his early 40s. He turned instead to politics. He turns 80 this year. So unfortunately I am too young to have worked with him which is a shame. His mathematical seminars at IHES in Paris are the stuff of legend. He was an incredibly charismatic mathematician. A mathematical prophet."

What kind of person is he?

"Grothendieck is an extremely complicated personality. His mathematics is extremely abstract and tough. He had an incredibly difficult childhood which you can read about in the last chapter of The Music of the Primes. The way he abandoned mathematics for politics upset many people. He currently lives the life of a hermit, hiding in the Pyrenees. It is said that he has gone crazy in later life and is starving himself to death."

Do you know a nice story about him?

"Grothendieck decided that teaching algebraic geometry in the jungles around Hanoi was the best way to protest against the Vietnam War. Not sure what the locals made of his incredibly abstract mathematics."
